Free School Meals Eligibility
Free School Meal (FSM) changes for the new academic year starting September 2026
The new Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026 has extended eligibility for FSM to all children in households that are in receipt of Universal Credit from the start of the 2026/27 academic year.
One of the main changes being introduced is the requirement to re-check a pupil’s eligibility annually. For those currently receiving FSM these checks will be undertaken by Kent School Meals team during this term so that we can inform you of the outcomes before the new academic year starts. This may or not mean that your child is still entitled to FSM as this will depend on whether your household receives Universal Credit.
What do parents/carers need to do?
If you think your child may be eligible for FSM please use the link below to make an application as soon as possible, even if your child may not actually intend to have a school meal on a daily basis.
Please make an application even if your child will be in KS1 next year (Years R, 1 and 2) and will receive the current Universal free school meals as the funding the school will receive for UFSM will be reduced from September as the government assumes a higher uptake of the new FSM.
